Background to SJGT
The Scottish Junior Golf Tour arose around seven years ago from discussions amongst a group of parents of enthusiastic young golfers who had met at various junior competitions over the previous few years. These parents were keen to support their childrens golfing development to their utmost ability but with no clear framework in which to do it.
Most of the children had received some coaching, were members of a local club and participated in various competitions throughout the summer. However, most of these competitions were purely under-18 competitions with no other age brackets; golf is the only sport that we were aware of that did not have competitions for different age groups. In addition there were no opportunities in autumn, winter and spring for boys under 14 years. The parents had a desire to change this situation and worked together to organise some fun competitions across Scotland and so the Scottish Junior Golf Tour came into being.
Much thought went into the types of competitions and the overall environment that the juniors would experience. We looked at Junior Development models in other countries like Sweden and travelled to age group tournaments in England and the USA. Walter had strong views about making sure the overall experience was fun and rewarding. Having worked at junior badminton events for many years he witnessed the horrendous drop out rate from his own sport. By 16 most of the juniors had given up.
We are delighted to say that nearly seven years on, all of the original group of juniors are still playing competitive golf. Some have just finished with junior golf and most of the rest are beginning their last season. Most of them have represented Scotland at junior level and about half of them are already playing university golf with more to follow this September.
